Malaysia walked away with a Diamond Award at the Das Goldene Stadttor (Golden City Gate) film competition at the ITB Berlin. The country’s entry was a four minute commercial on Sarawak which won the best in all categories. Against stiff competition from 32 countries with multiple entries, the international jury selected Sarawak’s entry Recharge in a New World.
The commercial features one of Sarawak’s ethnic communities, the Ibans. It showed the unique culture of the Ibans and their warm hospitality in hosting international business visitors. The objective of the commercial is to position Sarawak, located on the island of Borneo, as a new and vibrant business destination.
A major part of the commercial was shot in the rainforests of Sarawak and production took ten days with an all Malaysian film crew. The script was written by Peter Lo of Magic Makers and directed by international award winning Kuala Lumpur based film director, Yoki Chin.
On winning the award, Jill Henry, chief executive officer of the Sarawak Convention Bureau has this to say: “For our first production, we wanted to take a different approach to stand out and be noticed. Rather than try to showcase the whole destination we chose to produce a story lined TV commercial adding a touch of ‘tongue in cheek’ humour. We also did not try to shy away from the fact that many international meeting planners don’t yet know where Sarawak is. Hopefully that will all change now as we embark on an intensive profile building exercise in the lead-up to the opening of our new convention centre next year.”
