Kuching, the capital city of Sarawak in Malaysia will host the Interhash 2010, billed as the biggest event in the world of Hash since it started in 1978. It is expected that more than 5,000 Hashers from around the world will participate in the run.
This event will be a tourism bonanza for the State which will inject RM18 million into its economy. The Interhash from July 2 to 4 is well timed to be held just before the World Rainforest Music Festival, another major event held in Kuching, so as to encourage participants to extend their stay and explore the rest of Malaysia on holiday tours.
The bid for the Sarawak Rainforest Interhash 2010 was funded and supported by the Sarawak Convention Bureau, Sarawak Tourism Board, Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board, Malaysia Airlines, Malaysia Hash Council, MAS Wings, MAS Kargo and Guiness Anchor Berhad.
Jill Henry, chief executive of the Sarawak Convention Bureau commenting on the Bureau’s biggest international bid said, “Bidding for an international event of this magnitude takes courage and commitment and I am sure that this success will help us spread the word about our great destination and secure more high profile conventions and meetings in the future.”
As a first-time bidder, Kuching won by 500 votes from nearest rival Kenya. Other cities that had bid for the event were Bali and Kuala Lumpur.
